Skin prick testing involves placing small amounts of suspected allergens on the skin, typically the forearm or back, followed by pricking or scratching the skin's surface. This allows the allergens to enter the skin, stimulating a localized immune response if an allergy is present. After a brief waiting period, usually around 20 minutes, the allergist examines the skin for any signs of allergic reactions, such as redness, swelling, or itching. At Aspire Allergy & Sinus, we utilize this method to test for up to 58 of the most common allergens, enabling us to accurately identify what triggers your allergic reactions.
Intradermal testing involves injecting a small amount of the suspected allergen under the surface of the skin. With prick or scratch testing, the allergens are placed on top of the skin, whereas with intradermal skin testing the allergen is directly inserted under the skin with a needle. If the results of a skin prick test are negative, your clinician will perform an intradermal test, as they tend to be more accurate. The injection site is examined about 15 minutes after the injections are made to see if there are signs of a reaction.
At-home allergy tests are notorious for high rates of false positives and inaccuracies, often flagging foods or environmental factors you aren't actually allergic to. They only look at blood antibodies, which doesn't always equal a real-world reaction.

Typical food allergy testing can take up to 90 minutes. However, if you are doing an Oral Food Challenge, the appointment could take up to 4 hours.
We can do food allergy testing for children 4 months or older.
No - we test for allergic reactions, not just sensitivities. A true food allergy does not necessarily involve ingestion: exposure can be through contact with the skin or even breathing in particulates in the air.
Food intolerance or sensitivity does NOT include anaphylaxis, but can have some shared symptoms, typically nausea, vomiting, and delayed diarrhea. It is important to note that according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, there are no at-home food sensitivity tests (also called IgG Food Panels), that have been scientifically validated. This means that while the company may claim that you are sensitive to certain foods, and that you may feel better if you remove these foods from your diet, there is no scientific evidence to support this.

They are critical in the evaluation of sinus and allergy symptoms so that we understand any abnormalities in that anatomy. Yes, allergies can cause sinus issues! Allergies cause inflammation and swelling in the mucous membranes lining your nasal passages and sinuses. Often, this swelling can lead to the drainage pathways in the sinuses - the paths that get rid of the mucus - to become blocked. Once blocked, the mucus stays trapped in your sinuses, and that stagnant mucus becomes the perfect breeding ground for bacteria - leading to a sinus infection. Persistent sinus issues can then become part of a vicious cycle, because as long as the allergen is present in your environment, the inflammation remains. The sinus lining never gets a chance to heal, meaning the drainage pathways stay closed.
